Automate iOS App Icons with our Free Photoshop Action!

Hello and welcome!

This post is primarily for Windows developers that want to automatically generate app icons in Photoshop (CS2 onwards). It’s a no nonsense approach that will give you what you need; quickly! The image above shows some of the Fire Fu app icons that were generated from a single 1024 x 1024 pixel image.

To achieve this, I have created a Photoshop Action that will take your source image, and resize it to create all of the icons required for iOS 8+. All you have to do is load your artwork and press ‘Play’. For simplicity, the action will spit them out straight into the root of your C: drive. Here’s the full list of supported icons:

For graphics nerds that wish to know more, you’ll be pleased to read that each icon is iteratively resized from your high-resolution image, with a subtle Unsharp Mask used selectively at staggered resolutions to obtain the best possible results.

The action is free to use and all I ask is that you please don’t host the file or redistribute it yourself. Just provide a link to this page, please! I have done my best to ensure it works properly but please let me know if you experience any issues with it.
